  The success story of Coca-Cola

The origin of Coca-Cola dates to the 19th century, when Dr. John Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, United States, came up with its formula by mixing flavoured syrup and carbonated water, in 1886. The delicious and refreshing beverage was sold at soda fountains for only 5 cents a glass, and it soon became many people’s favourite in the neighbourhood.

To extend its reach across the nation, the Coca-Cola Company started putting its drink in bottles. While its popularity grew rapidly, some companies tried to replicate its success by developing similar products. In response, Coca-Cola rolled out its contoured bottle, which set the drink apart from the copycats and remains an iconic feature today.

Its distinctive taste aside, Coca-Cola’s commercial success owes much to its effective marketing strategies. Back then, when giving away products was still a novel concept, Pemberton and his colleagues would mail out free-sample coupons to potential customers. This method proved to be successful, as it caught the public’s attention and boosted sales of the drink. Another useful approach adopted by the brand is to associate itself with popular culture. Santa Claus, a legendary figure representing kindness and happiness in Western cultures, has been so heavily featured in Coca-Cola’s advertising campaigns that there are myths that the jolly and chubby modern version was created by the company. Whether it’s true or not remains debatable, but it’s clear that the image of Coca-Cola has already earned a place in popular culture.

In 2011, the ‘Share a Coke’ campaign was launched --it replaced the company’s logo on a bottle with the phrase ‘Share a Coke with’, followed by one of the most popular names in Australia. The brand wanted to encourage the public to try a Coke and share the news themselves. It became an instant hit, going viral on social media, as people were keen to share photos of bottles with the names of their friends and loved ones. At the time of writing, the campaign has covered over 80 countries.

Coca-Cola’s reach has even gone beyond planet Earth. In 1985 it became the first soft drink to be consumed in outer space --something Pemberton probably couldn’t foresee when he first invented his drink.

We use our smartphones for almost everything – chatting with friends, checking the news, shopping, buying coffee ... We rely on this little gadget so much that it has become an integral part of our daily lives.

But are we hopelessly addicted to our phones? The answer should be no: we are the master of our phones, not the other way round – at least that is what we hope. So why don’t we give ourselves a challenge? Shake off your phone habits and stop staring at the phone screen for one whole day. Then write down what happens and submit it to the school website to share your experience with us! You are welcome to tell us what you do during the day whether you find it hard to cope with when you are disconnected whether you have any advice for others who accept this challenge how you feel in general.
