  01Thread of thought

  03Sample answer

Ever since I was a little kid, perhaps when I was eight years old or so, I developed a keen interest in reading. I devoured books as many as I could in my free time. And there is this one book that left a big imprint on my mind, and if I'm not mistaken, I read it perhaps ten years ago, when I took a quick glance of some books collected by my father on the bookshelf. The title of the book really caught my eyeballs and intrigued me. It was called the Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking.

  Language bits

  ●Ever since 自从......

Eg.:Ever since childhood, I have acquired an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

●take a keen interest in sth.

●as many as I could 尽可能多地

●leave a big imprint on my mind

●take a quick glance of sth.

I was on a roller-coaster ride of emotions when I first read the book. I mean, when I opened the first few pages of introduction, I was really puzzled as it contained lots of knowledge in the sphere of physics, which is something totally beyond my comprehension. I almost wanted to give up when I came across those challenging terminologies such as Theory of Relativity and Singularity. Fortunately, I stuck to the reading and something amazing happened.

  Language bits

  ●on a roller-coaster ride of emotions

●sth. is beyond my comprehension

  ●stick to sth.

The author described and explained various phenomena in astronomy and physics in the language plain and clear to ordinary people who do not major in these areas. Sometimes the words he uses are really hilarious as well. Above all, he writes logically and covers important aspects such as quantum physics, Theory of Relativity,  Black Hole and Hawking Radiation vividly together with many illustrations to shed light on those abstract theories. So the readers find it less daunting and more intriguing to continue the reading. As I proceeded, I felt electrified and enlightened by the author’s explanation.

  Language bits

●shed light on sth.

  ●be electrified by sth.

  ●be enlightened by sth.

Anyway, the book simply just blew me away, and that was why I decided to dive into the area of physics and astronomy.  For example, I wondered what it would be like if the Black Hole absorbed everything, including all the planets. And if human beings wanted to prevent that from happening, was there really anything they could do about it ? What’s more, I was totally captivated by the theory of Big Bang Theory because according to the author, the universe would meet its final fate. It would either swell infinitely or collapse finally. You could imagine how stunned I was when I read it for the first time. It was really an engaging read requiring all your effort and energy.

  Language bits

  ●be captivated by sth.

●require all one’s energy and effort

Ten years went by. The colors of paper faded. Those pages felt fragile, and if they were not handled with care, they could easily fall apart. The cover was tattered, and in order to support the book, my mother even bound the spine with stitches. However, it’s something that I hold dear to my heartcos it has lots of sentimental value. Whenever I flip through those pages, a feeling of nostalgia surge and it takes me back to  those days when I sat down quietly before the desk, immersed in the read.

  Language bits

  ●be torn and tattered

●take me back to those days把我带来那些时光

●be immersed in the read
